Homemade Help

Okay, for the three or maybe four of you who read this, I need some help. I really love receiving homemade gifts, and this year I would like to give some. Now, granted, I don't have a lot of time - I think the holiday season has completely ambushed me this year. Two years ago I was finished Christmas shopping in Sept. Last year I was done by the end of October. I'm in trouble, folks.

So here's my plea - I need ideas of things I can do that are thoughtful and simple. Maybe something that you've given or received in the past. If I don't get any help, a lot of people are going to end up with banana bread!

I'm ready for your wonderful ideas!

and what's wrong with banana bread?

last year, we made cheese starws, 3-4 kinds of cookies and fudge, divided it up, put it in cellophane with a bow and called it good. everyone loved the assortment. it's like the cookie swap!

if that's too boring, you can always have the girls paint more pumpkins and give those out : )

I agree with the homemade food stuff...we like to give Amish Friendship Bread with a bag of the starter as well...also a note that has the verse that Jesus is the bread of life...I've given homemade salsa, homemade white bread, homemade hot chocolate, etc. You can make sourdough bread and give out starters for that, too.

If you're looking for something more personal (and you have any time at all) you could go to Shutterfly or Snapfish, etc and create a 2008 calendar with your fun family shots on it. It's a little more expensive so these would have to be for "big" gifts ...great for grandparents.

Good luck! Sherrey

OOPS...thought of something else...what about theme-bags...Movie bag -- a bag of microwave popcorn, Milk Duds, and a gift certificate for a free rental or movie bucks...all put into a Popcorn bag from the theatre and tied with a bow

Texas bag --chili spice packet, salsa, chips, BBQ sauce, etc all in a large ceramic chili bowl...

Other ideas are Bath Bags, Foreign Country bags which include items to make a food from that country (pizza sauce, pizza cutter, garlic salt, etc for Italy) What do they eat in Mozambique? Cold winter nights bag -- hot cider packets, red hots, candle, matches, mug...

You can buy the cellophane wrapping at a craft store and use the hair dryer to make it mold together like the fancy bouquet baskets. Tie it up with a ribbon and VOILA!

Hope this gets your creative juices flowing...Sherrey

I have a very easy recipe for a fudge wreath. I got it from Rachel Ray...it has like 3 ingredients and it makes a beautiful wreath. Also, I just went to Hobby Lobby (the best store in the world) and their ornaments were on sale. I bought some little wooden ones for 25 cents and I'm going to let the kids paint them. It gives them something fun to do and gets some gifts done at the same time.

I also always make butterscotch haystacks. Those are mega easy and very yummy.

I saw someone mentioned the calendar. Very good idea for grandparents. I did one last year for the first time and the grandparents went crazy. They said all of their friends got one for Christmas and they were glad they had one this year. I haven't found very cheap one, though. I'll let you know if I do. I just used Walgreens last year and had a 50% off coupon. But I haven't found that coupon this year.

Sherrey - Thanks for the many ideas. I really like them because they don't require just a whole lot of prep work! Perfect for the time crunch I'm in. Maybe I could figure out a Mississippi bag and include the cheese straws that Paige mentioned.

Jill, you have to tell me more about the chocolate wreaths - I'm really curious. Also, where are the wooden ornaments in Hobby Lobby. That place is so huge I could look forever and not find them. I love that idea for tying onto the packages I'm going to come up with! The girls will love being a part of the project, too!

Success! My creative juices are starting to flow...many thanks!!

When you go into the store they are on the first row to the right. Not the rows that are right by the cashier and run parallel. The first row that runs perpendicular. Check the web to make sure they're still on sale.

Okay, I think I'm going with a cold winter night bags with the cheese straws as the homemade touch. I'm not at home now, but I'll post Paige's Paula Dean recipe when I get back from TX for any others who might be looking for some ideas.
